L’article propose une traduction française de la section VII de l'Expositio Problematum, composé en 1310 par le médecin italien Pietro d'Abano. Il s’agit d’un commentaire aux Problemata d’Aristote, section VII, qui porte sur la compassion : le terme désigne une réaction involontaire d’imitation du comportement d’autrui, selon un principe de sympathie. Pietro d'Abano part des suggestions d’Aristote dans les Problemata pour étudier les différentes manifestations de la compassion. La contagion du bâillement en est l’exemple emblématique ; l’appellation comprend aussi la souffrance à distance, la contagion de l’envie d’uriner, la transmission du frisson ou de la maladie. Le commentaire de Pietro d'Abano interroge les interactions de l’âme et du corps, les relations de l’homme à la nature, à l’animal et aux autres hommes, ainsi que les modalités de l’action à distance.

The article presents a French translation of the Expositio Problematum, VII, written in 1310 by the Italian doctor Pietro d’Abano. The treatise is a commentary on Aristotle’s Problemata, section VII, which concerns the concept of compassion, and suggests an involuntary imitation of the behavior of others according to a principle of sympathy. Pietro d'Abano departs from Aristotle's suggestions in the Problemata to study the various manifestations of compassion. Its emblematic example is the contagion of the yawn; the notion also applies to the sharing of pain, the contagion of the wish to urinate, the transmission of the shiver and the contagion of disease. Pietro d'Abano’s commentary leads to broader questions which relate to the interactions between the body and the soul, the relation between humans and nature, humans and animals, as well as the issue of action at a distance.
